Cisco Tuning Adapter Firmware Updated

Sometime in the last 24 hours my Cisco STA1520 Tuning Adapter was updated to the latest firmware. We knew the firmware existed and was out in the wild thanks to Ben Drawbaugh over at Engadget HD but there was no specific release date. Well I finally got my update. For those that do not know I live near Charlotte, NC and I have Time Warner Cable.

It definitely was not an elegant notification on the update though. I read that Ceton had updated the InfiniTV-4 firmware and drivers so I did the update. Everything seemed to be working fine until I woke up this morning. I had an SDV issue with one of my recordings. I checked the Ceton diagnostic web page for my tuners and saw that my tuning adapters were not working properly. I then checked the firmware of the SDV adapters through the CETON diagnostic screens and sure enough the tuning adapters had been updated.

One step closer to a PC as an extender

Engadget HD has a post about the new amendments to the Cable Card spec just announced by CableLabs.  The first and most important for Media Center users is that cable card tuners can now be shared across the network.

Ceton has already said that their tuners could be shared but the feature was disabled due to the CableLabs spec.  Well now they can turn that feature back on via a firmware update.

This also means that Silicon Dust can enable the feature in their tuner out of the gate and the HDHomeRun Prime will work just like the regular HDHomeRun.

So now all we need is the PlayReady DRM to catch up and allow the CopyOnce content to stream to another PC in the same manner as an Extender and the dream is a reality.

Things are coming together nicely.  Slowly, but nicely.

Ceton Tuner Finally Shipping

According to EngagetHD the Ceton Quad Cable Card tuner is finally shipping to those that pre-ordered the tuner.  While this is great news the excitement needs to be tempered a little bit since the units ready to ship will not cover all of the pre-orders placed to date.  Hopefully Ceton can get more of the tuners into the marketplace and finally build up a healthy supply.

Ceton Tuner Update on Zones.com

Zones.com has fixed the price of the Ceton tuner to the MSRP of $399.99.  If the price was holding you back from ordering then do not let that hold you back.

Are you going to get in line now or wait?  Leave a comment.

Ceton Tuners – Good News, Bad News

Good news first:

Ben Drawbaugh from Endgaget HD is reporting that the Ceton tuners are now available for pre-order.  You can go get in line now for you 1 card / 4 streams Cable Card goodness.  It’s at a website called Zones.com that I have not heard of before.

Here is the pre-order link: Ceton InfiniTV 4 at Zones.com

Now the bad news:

The release date has been pushed back by to months from March 31st to May 31st.  Also Zones.com is selling the card for $478.99 instead of the $399.99 price that was announced a few months ago.  Not sure what’s up with that.

I think I may wait until Amazon.com starts shipping them for $399.99 before I pull the trigger.

Ceton tuner can run over the network!

HDHomerun stole some of the Ceton thunder at CES last month when they announced a dual tuner cable card product that would work over the network. Media Center enthusiasts where extremely excited at the possibility of setups this introduced including ditching Media Center extenders and using a full PC only setup.

Well it looks like more options are here as Jeremy Hammer has announced via the Green Button that the Ceton 4 stream tuner will work over the network too. Jeremy writes:

Computer A: Install Ceton MOCUR; Select “Ethernet Network” and “Ceton MOCUR Network”; Right click, bridge networks.

Computer B (Note: No tuners installed): Open MC; Go through setup. 4 tuners found.

Note: This was blocked behavior with the ATI OCUR driver. It is not blocked with our driver.

Here is the whole thread: Post at 4:23pm

Things just got a lot more interesting. I think that HDHomerun just lost a few customers. With the Ceton tuner having 2 more streams and an actual release date this seems like the tuner to get.
